Summary:

The Communications Specialist’s primary role is to assist in crafting and disseminating compelling messages that enhance the Cooperative’s public image and promote its mission. Participates in communication strategies to effectively reach target audiences through various channels, including digital platforms, press releases, and internal communications. Responsibilities include writing and editing content such as newsletters, social media posts, and website updates, ensuring consistency in messaging and brand voice. Monitors media coverage and public perception, proactively addressing any issues that may arise. Analyzes communication metrics to assess the impact of campaigns and continuously refine strategies to optimize outreach and engagement. Strong writing skills, strategic thinking, and a keen understanding of media dynamics are essential to excel in this role.

Objectives:

  • Assist in the development and implementation of a comprehensive communications program designed to build and strengthen A&N Electric Cooperative’s role and reputation as a leader and authoritative voice in the community.
  • Promote and maintain a positive image of the Cooperative among print, radio and electronic media covering A&N Electric Cooperative and its service area.
  • Enhance the professional image of the Cooperative by evaluating all printed material, including form letters, brochures, bill inserts and other methods of communication.
  • Contribute to A&N Electric Cooperative's success by seeking for, and capitalizing upon, opportunities to advance the cooperative's mission and educate the public about A&N Electric Cooperative and the cooperative form of business.

Job Related Qualifications

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists with design, edit and publish various publications by the assigned deadline dates, including but not limited to: Cooperative Living, the Member newsletter, the employee newsletter, etc. Responsible for the continued development of these publications to ensure they meet the needs of members and employees.
  • Work with graphic designers and staff establishing mutually agreed deadlines, correcting proofs, proofreading and generally ensuring high quality for the publications.
  • Assists to develop, evaluate and update the annual comprehensive communications plan based upon A&N Electric Cooperative's goals and objectives as determined by the President/CEO.
  • Work with staff to develop and implement a comprehensive production schedule for the annual communications plan, including cost analysis, benefits, activity reporting, etc., for communications activities.
  • Assists to develop and coordinate the content/photography of the A&N Electric Cooperative Cooperative Living pages. The majority of Cooperative Living is written by the A&N Communications Specialist.
  • Plan, develop and write the cooperative's annual report.
  • Write and assist in the development of bill inserts, marketing materials and special print projects.
  • Assists to plan, develop and coordinate the Cooperative's videography and photographic needs as related to the overall communications plan.
  • Monitor community demographics, concerns and activities and integrates this knowledge into the overall communications plan to more effectively reach members and the public through A&N Electric Cooperative's communication efforts.
  • Monitor member satisfaction data and work with member satisfaction team to develop communications strategies to address key issues.
  • Assist in the development and management of the budget as it relates to the communications plan including Cooperative Living, advertising and other areas of responsibility.
  • Provide communications training to A&N Electric Cooperative’s employees.
  • Orders materials for marketing and safety education purposes and manages inventory.
  • Represent the cooperative through active participation in community and professional organizations; serves as Co-op representative for community relations and public presentations.
  • Manages A&N Electric Cooperative’s media presence via radio, print publications, company website, social media and serves as a media contact for general inquiries, news releases, and emergency/outage situations. Writes and/or edits all planned and emergency media releases prior to distribution.
  • Must possess basic computer skills, including a working knowledge of Microsoft Products, including, but not limited to: Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint as required by job responsibilities.
  • Helps maintain social media outlets, including the A&N Electric Cooperative website to keep content ‘fresh’ and engaging for members.
  • Knowledgeable of A&N Electric Cooperative sponsorships and the charitable-giving program.
  • Assists in the planning and execution of the annual Cooperative Youth Tour in Washington, D.C.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

Education:

Four-year college degree or equivalent experience with emphasis in English, journalism, mass communications or public relations is preferred.

Experience:

Must have at least three (3) years of progressive experience in written and oral communications. Experience needed in dealing with electronic and print media and developing and implementing public relations, communications and advertising plans. Photography, videography and desktop publishing experience is preferred.

Job Knowledge:

Must have specific knowledge of public relations concepts and communications methods in addition to knowledge of the cooperative's philosophy and objectives. Must keep up with current issues facing electric cooperatives and their impact on the cooperative, its members and its communities. Must maintain working knowledge of trends and developments in area of responsibility including media relations, magazine and special publication production, public opinion research, print and broadcast advertising. Knowledge of utility operations preferred but not required. Must possess basic computer skills, including a working knowledge of Microsoft Office products, including, but not limited to: Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint as required by job responsibilities.

Abilities and Skills:

The ability to communicate persuasively, both orally and in writing, with managers, staff, and the public is vital. Must also be able to write creatively as well as communicate technical information in a form that is easily understood by others. Creativity, initiative, good judgment, logic, self-motivation, perseverance and the ability to express thoughts clearly and simply are essential. Must be skilled in meeting with and speaking to people, individually and in groups. Must be able to concentrate during stressful situations while maintaining production deadlines. Must be able to review, organize and disseminate information in a timely manner. Experience using desktop publishing is helpful. Basic photography skills are desirable. Familiarity with printing terminology and processes is desired. Decision making, problem solving, and research skills are also important. Must have the ability to use Microsoft Office software to create documents, reports, and presentations. Must begin process for becoming a Certified Cooperative Communicator within two years after accepting Communication Specialist position. Perform other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions:

Much of the work will be performed in Tasley. Requires working both inside and outside of the office. May require irregular working hours, especially if there is an emergency or crisis. Some out-of-town and out-of-state travel is required. Schedule is subject to change without notice.
