A&N Electric Cooperative is a member-owned electrical distribution cooperative serving over 35,000 homes, farms, and businesses in Accomack and Northampton Counties on Virginia’s Eastern Shore and Smith Island in Somerset County, Maryland. 

 Cooperatives like us began in the 1930s. At that time, more than 50 years after the first American neighborhood was lighted, rural areas were being left in the dark because it was too expensive to provide electricity. Without power, the simplest of farm chores remained back-breaking work.

Today A&N Electric Cooperative continues to provide electric service to its members in the counties of Accomack and Northampton on Virginia’s Eastern Shore and Smith Island, Maryland. The cooperative is non-profit, with no outside investors. The same refundable $5 fee charged in 1940 is all that is required to become a member. Any profits are returned to customers in the form of capital credits. 

Eastern Shore Community College is the place to go on the Shore for higher education, workforce development, continuing education, and community education.

You can start out at ESCC and end up in any career through either our career and technical education programs or academic transfer programs. ESCC has guaranteed admission agreements with more than 25 Virginia four-year institutions. With careful planning, most or all of your credits will transfer.

We have a scholarship or grant available for almost every student, a laptop lending program for

students who need one, and our students are enjoying success with our recently implented 8-week

class schedules.

The College also offers GED preparation and testing, customized training, and non-credit and personal enrichment courses.

Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital (RSMH), a local facility in Onancock, is an integrated part of the Riverside Health network of care. The campus includes the 52-bed hospital, an outpatient cancer and infusion center and a multispecialty medical office building. The hospital offers emergency services, medical/surgical care as well as cardiology, diagnostic and imaging services, gastroenterology, home health, hospice care, labor and delivery , neurology, obstetrics, orthopedics,  podiatry, pulmonology, rehabilitation, respiratory therapy, surgery, urology and women’s health services. The hospital is nationally accredited by DNV and is a certified primary stroke center. It is a pillar of rural health care, employing more than 500 team members across a broad spectrum of specialties close to home. In addition, the hospital has been named one of the Top 20 Rural and Community Hospitals in the United States by the National Rural Health Association.
